1940’s Makeup & The Perfect, Long-Lasting Red Lip

1940's makeup & the perfect red lip

A friend of mine requested a 1940’s vintage makeup tutorial with a red lip for a black-tie event that she is attending this weekend.  Her main concern was how to get her red lip to last all night through dinner, drinks, dancing, and/or whatever else the night may bring.  In this tutorial, I give you a few tips and tricks to make your lip color last all day and night.  Without further ado, here’s the look and I hope you enjoy!

1940's makeup & the perfect red lip

1940’s makeup was all about enhancing one’s own natural beauty.  A flawless face with a little glow, bold and beautiful brows, minimal eye makeup, and then pow!  A knockout red lip.  I added false lashes to help balance out the face a little and give her eyes some drama since it’s an evening event.  I think it really completes the look without overpowering the lip.  After completing this look, I couldn’t help but wish I lived in the 40’s so that I could wear this all day every day.  Maybe I’ll just do it and see if it makes a comeback?  I don’t know though…I was getting some mighty weird looks in Target yesterday.

So here are my tips and tricks for a long-lasting red lip:
1. Exfoliate your lips with a lip scrub or soft toothbrush, and then apply a lip balm and allow it to sink in before you start in with the lipstick.  Wearing red or any other bright color highlights dry, chapped lips.
2. Conceal your lips so that the color reads true and isn’t altered by the natural shade of your own lips.
3. Line your lips with a lip liner that matches the lipstick you’ve chosen and fill them in completely.  This is seriously one of the most important steps!  It will act as a stain and keep the color from fading or wearing off.
4. Blot your lips on a tissue after you’ve applied your first coat of lipstick.  Getting rid of the excess will cause the lipstick to act more like a stain as well.
5. Reapply a second coat.  Applying your lip color in these strategic steps may seem excessive or tedious, but it will keep you from having to touch up your lips 85 times throughout the evening.
6. Powder your lips with a translucent powder through a single ply of tissue.  This is the final step to really lock in your color.
7. Wipe the excess lipstick from the insides of your lips on a clean finger.  This looks and sounds really weird, but trust me, it’s better to get it off on your finger than have it all over your teeth.

I filmed this yesterday morning, ate lunch, snacked a little, ate dinner, kissed my husband and my hoos, and my lipstick NEVER budged.  I never reapplied and my lips were just as vibrant when I took it off around 9pm last night as they were when I finished filming.  That’s not to say that I didn’t leave my husband’s lips and hoos’ noses a little pink, but my lips looked no worse for the wear.

I’ve never used NYX lip products before and I was blown away by them.  Not only did they really last, but my lips never once felt dried out.  With my lips, that’s simply a miracle.  My lips are dry to start with, so coating them with product is usually my ticket to Chapped Lip Hell.  I was fully expecting to have to apply lip balm as the day worn on, but the lipstick kept my lips soft and hydrated all day and night.  Maybe that’s a sign that I am supposed to adopt this as my go-to look….

I hope you’ve enjoyed this tutorial!  Tweet me a picture or tag me on Instagram if you decide to try it out.  I’ll be back tomorrow with a special post that will help y’all get to know the girl behind the camera a little better.

Have just started following your blog and love what I have seen. You may have already covered this, but my question to you is about feet, what is the best way to keep your feet in good shape. I use lotions and have the thing to take off callouses, but I just can’t seem to find the right combination.
